The arc
A short, sharp descent into a single haunted room — tension built through ash and silence, and resolved in one blow. The chapel gave up its secret almost as soon as it was challenged.
What happened
The Chapel of Ash was not a place anyone entered by choice. Elira Vael nocked an arrow and pressed herself along the left wall, moving through ankle-deep grey ash toward whatever waited inside. Verith Stonecall raised his holy symbol and stepped into the nave, unflinching. Ash lay inches thick across the floor, every footfall a small grey ghost, and at the far end a cracked bell hung silent in its frame. Behind the altar, something was breathing.
Elira held her breath against the ash and peered toward the altar, trying to make out the shape of the breather without closing the distance. Verith, in no mood for caution, called out a challenge and readied his mace. The thing behind the altar unfolded — a ghoul, ash-white and starving — and it came at Verith fast and low.
It never reached him. The mace caught the ghoul across the jaw and it folded into the ash, still. The cracked bell above them gave one cracked note, and the chapel went quiet. Whatever the Chapel of Ash had been holding, Verith and Elira had broken its grip in a single, decisive stroke.
The party
Called out a challenge to the breathing thing behind the altar and struck the ghoul down with a single mace blow to the jaw
Crept along the left wall with arrow nocked and held her breath to peer through the ash at the altar before the fight
Verith stands at 6 of 9 HP, bruised but unbowed, and Elira is unscathed at full strength. The chapel is quiet behind them.
