Furnace 2007

Furnace 2007 was a great success thanks to all, organisers, traders and most of all, the attendees. Two days of gaming fun covering a myriad of gaming settings and systems (although no d20 this year) with a strong emphasis on storytelling and fast furious fun. Kult of Keepers (now the late KoK) kept the supply of Call of Cthulhu games coming, we had myriads of innovative and original Savage Worlds games and many games run using the HeroQuest ruleset but in different ways as diverse as Serenity and Dads Army. If you’d like to see the games run, view the final programme.

Attendees Memories

We asked attendees how Furnace 2007 was for them and heres’s what some of them said.. uncensored!

“The thing about Furnace is the lack of repentance that it’s just about the gaming. It’s not about LARPs, quizzes, panels and promotion. It’s like a bar where old man D&D rubs shoulders with hip youngsters like Cold City and Gwenthia whilst sharing a pint with his old mate and fellow Traveller, BRP. There’s no dress code, no lists of who is allowed in, just bloody good fun and friends.” - Dom Mooney

HeroQuest Dads Army

“Another weekend of novel games in charming company, five minute’s walk from my front door - satisfaction is all but guaranteed. The event must never relocate… This year I learnt two important things while fighting Space Nazis. One: if you find yourself thinking ‘I could have been more heroic!’ - don’t, in the name of all that’s holy, go back. Even if scant seconds have passed, it’s already far, far too late. Two: any plan too sophisticated to describe with a hand guesture is too sophisticated to ever work. (Actually I already knew this, but it never seems to sink in.)” - Richard O’Reilly

Tim from Sceaptune Games

“Vending machines selling lager. Oaty Fruity Bars. Playing pirates so piratical they’d kill a partner at range rather than risk them blabbing of the loot. Duck rights.” - Mik Reed

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Furnace is all about the games. Ran and played in some great games, with a high-energy Piratical start, Cthulhu from the Kult of Keepers and playing in an Eternal Champion by the writer of the game, Furnace is a little Con that punches far above it’s weight. I love to contribute by bringing and running a diverse collection of games for the melting pot and encourage others to join in the rewarding experience next year.” - Gary “EvilGaz” Bowerbank

The atmosphere was great - I really love the Garrison Hotel for roleplaying in. I also liked the wide variety of games. I got to play my favourite system. The only complaint I have is that I couldn’t get wireless access without paying a fortune. - Harriet Lowe

“Furnace 2007 was the friendliest most intimate rpg con I have been to, plenty of atmosphere friendly gamers and above all top notch participation games. I only wish I had been able to stay for the whole weekend… Looking forward to Furnace 2008″ - Kadath (Greg Phillips)

Players

Furnace ‘07 will for me always be a bittersweet memory. There was much joy tobe had, even locked away in the cellar of madness - where all the Call of Cthulhu was to be found. Down there, strange and terrible things were to be found. The worst of it was Keary Birch going ‘eee-eee-eee’; I still wake at nights in a cold sweat. But there is also sadness too, because Furnace, unknown to any of us, was the last official outing for the Kult of Keepers. No more will we see the collective madness of the Mike, Mike, Paul, Keary, Matt, Wim or myself. The labcoats have been put away. It is fitting, however that Furnace should be the last. - Rik Kershaw-Moore
